This class is an introductory class that focuses on the development of our students’ drawing, painting and ceramic skills! Their drawings come to life when they learn how to create art pieces with shading skills and color theory! This class progresses students of all levels, allowing the students to experience a variety of media and lessons from each of these sequential eight-week sessions. The students’ lessons will focus on the use of design elements and principles of art, artist inspirations and compositional skills as they simultaneously advance their drawing and painting skills. They will be introduced to a variety of drawing media (pencil, ink, etc.) throughout various lessons. Drawing and painting from observation is also strongly encouraged in order to help train their artist eyes as they draw and paint from life as they explore still life, portraits and much more as they journey through each sequenced session!

This high school level class is for students of all levels and previous art experiences, and who are eager to further develop their drawing and painting skills. Students will advance their drawing skills through the use of various drawing media (pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and chalks) and techniques (contour line drawing, shading and color blending ) when they explore the traditional subject matter of still life, landscapes and figure portraiture. They will also develop their painting skills when they use their understanding of color theory (color wheel, value, warm and cool colors, intermediate and complementary colors) in their work. Various styles of artists will be shown to inspire the students’ conceptual thinking skills, as well as their use of technical skills in their own creations. The students are given many opportunities to choose their own subject matter and media for their drawings and paintings in this class! This is a great class for students interested in the possible opportunity of participating in the National Scholastics Art and Writing Awards and the Seth Magaziner Art Competition each year. This is also a great course for students interested in creating an art portfolio for college.

Digital Art and Animation Design (Ages 8-17) in Smithfield

This design art class is about exploring a variety of digital art media (digital design and animation). Students will create characters, landscapes, comic strip panels and stop motion animation digitally using their Apple iPad with their downloaded apps called Procreate and Flip a Clip! Skills of animation designers will be explored with fun and exciting prompts to inspire our young designers! (Students will be grouped according to age and level.) Newly added, students will also have opportunities to explore claymation, using Stop Motion Studio, in the session!
Materials Needed: a 9 in. x 12 in. spiral bound sketchbook, a stylus pen, and an iPad (Students are required to have their own iPad in order to participate in this class. However, we do have a limited number of studio iPads available if needed. Please inquire within, first come first serve.)

Join us for a wheel throwing classes and learn the basics of centering clay, the throwing of cylinders, and the foundations of all forms on the wheels. We will start simple and work our way up to various functional forms like bowls, mugs and plates! Students will also learn various glazing techniques such as layering, sgraffito and dipping. Perfect for beginners or all pre-teen – teenage artists! Only three seats are available in this semi-private class!
Please be sure to wear sneakers and tie back long hair to prepare for your wheel throwing!

Students will learn how to build with clay when they learn about the hand building skills of coils and slabs as they build pottery and sculptures. They will learn the techniques and methods of throw on the wheel also which is always so much fun to learn about! If interested, the students will also have the opportunity to work with additional three dimensional media such as paper mache, wire, cardboard, and found objects to help build their knowledge of three dimensional vocabulary and techniques!

FOR THE BEGINNER: This class is designed with the beginner adult in mind! We will introduce our beginner students to the basics of drawing with the use of graphite and charcoal media during observational drawing and shading lessons before learning about color theory painting. Students are guided through the fundamentals of drawing to help them build their confidence in their art making skills and successfully prepare for their painting lessons! Students’ first 4 week session usually includes more drawing lessons than the painting lessons! We believe drawing is the foundation to all art forms!
FOR THE ADVANCED: This class offers continuous learning opportunities to our students as the students advance their skills from session to session! Drawing and painting lessons are included throughout these sessions.
Artist Productions
This private instructional class is for experienced students that have the goal of exhibiting their art to public audiences (i.e., art exhibits, galleries, commissioned work, etc.).
The class will be taught personally by artist/instructor Claudia Venditto, who has 25+ years of experience as an artist/ instructor.
The class focuses on the goals of students who wish to strengthen their art work and develop their art collection to be gallery and show ready.
Methods in teaching will include drawing, painting and mixed media that support the individualized styles of the student as they further develop their skills and inner voice as an artist.
Critiques given in class and outside of class (via texts at additional fee) will provide professional feedback that also encourage informative dialogue throughout the student’s art process and development as an advanced artist.
